I feel like the wiki has a problem with images being uploaded that don’t have descriptive titles. Strings of gibberish and Downloads with time stamps aren’t really telling us what the image depicts. Perhaps an announcement letting folks know would be appropriate?
Hmm… well to be sure, at least broadly descriptive image files are preferable to "File: Screenshot 1976 at 27h86s.png" or "File:Kybrdsmshnnszglrgyrrr.jpg". But on the other hand, I wouldn't necessarily phrase this in terms of the Wiki "having a problem"; it's not as though we often have cause to search for images by name, is it? Most images on the Wiki are only destined to appear in one or two places.
If anyone has any specific suggestions of how we might make such an announcement (and I'm not against it), please head over to the Discord Server to discuss it. But while a recommendation couldn't go amiss, I don't think this is a priority.
Well, it would be nice for folks like me who like to check the upload log. Kind of hard to know what new images might be interesting and what I want to avoid when the image titles tell me nothing about them.
@Scrooge MacDuck @TheMidgetMoose @Kilmarnock228 Yes, I see what you mean about non-descriptive image names (and also admit that I am probably the most frequent uploader of images with non-descriptive names, I'm afraid), and while I suppose it's not ideal, it's not really much of a problem, either - as Scrooge MacDuck said, we don't often have cause to search for an image by name, and when we do, said image can more easily be found on the page which it is being used to illustrate anyway. Still, I will, in the future, remember to name images more descriptively. It is possible to make an announcement that will appear to everyone who has been on the Wiki recently (it will appear under the bell icon in the header), so if everyone's in agreement that making an announcement is the right thing to do, we can do so fairly easily.
@Drleevezan That sounds reasonable to me.
I take it there's not much interest in looking to rename images so that their filenames are more descriptive?
If you're willing to put in the work, there's no one stopping you from going through all the "File:Screenshot_7808RBG67-1.png" images and renaming them to more sensible file names, but no, I don't think we should make this a big priority.
Oh, and @Kilmarnock228, what the devil is this "upload log" of which you speak?
At any rate, everyone, there's not much sense in moving the conversation now when we've all made our points here, but remember that the preferred venue for "Wiki management"-type discussion is the Discord Server. Rule 2 of Discussions is temporarily suspended (as in, we'll go ahead with what's been decided here, obviously), but please.
@Scrooge MacDuck I looked at an image, but it didn't seem to have any feature to enable me to rename it. When I pull up the edit menu it only lists the options of History, Replace, and Talk. So far as I'm aware, "Replace" would just let me upload another version of the same image but wouldn't enable me to change the image's name. The upload log can be found here; it also typically appears when you go to Special:Recentchanges on the wiki, which is where I usually go to see what's been happening on various wiki sites.
@Kilmarnock228 Ooh, I see. Well, thank you. What's the point of this page relative to Special:Images, though?
(And… ah, phooey. Yeah, the rename button is only available to admins, isn't it? Hm.)
@Scrooge MacDuck Well, maybe it's just me, but I prefer the textual list, hence why I started this discussion in the first place. I prefer to have an idea of what the image will depict before I view it.
I'll be happy to help out with renaming images.
What do you think?
