Assignment Birdwatch, also known as Protective Cacophony, is a story written by John Antrobus and Dave Angus and drawn by Vicar. It features Donald Duck, Huey, Dewey, and Louie Duck, the Great S.Q.U.A.C.K.B.O.X. of the Junior Woodchucks, and, in the species' debut, a Tri-Crested Tittertwill and its babies.
Plot
Huey, Dewey, and Louie are given an important assignment by a Woodchuck leader, the Great S.Q.U.A.C.K.B.O.X.: they must protect a rare Tri-Crested Tittertwill that has come to roost on Pickpocket Peak from any noise that might upset the bird. Unfortunately for the eager young Woodchucks (and the bird), Donald insists on tagging along, and, in trying to keep things quiet, winds up creating most of the noise himself!
Continuity
- The Tri-Crested Tittertwill would later reappear in the theme park attraction Camp Woodchuck Kitchen (2016) and in the 2017 Continuum in the DuckTales 2017 episode Challenge of the Senior Junior Woodchucks (2020).
Behind the scenes
Assignment Birdwatch was created September the 23, 1987, and was first published June the 15, 1988, in the Danish Anders And & Co. #1988-25. It was later printed in English in Gladstone Comic Album #18, Gladstone Leather Bound Hardcover Comic Albums #4, Walt Disney's Comics in Color #3, and Uncle Scrooge and Donald Duck in Color #1.
The story is notable as the debut of the Tri-Crested Tittertwill, which later went on to become the mascot of Tokyo Disneyland's Camp Woodchuck Kitchen.
