Atomo Bleep-Bleep (original Italian name: Atomino Bip-Bip) is a secondary character of the Mickey Mouse universe, created by Romano Scarpa. Although he initially disappeared after six stories, he remained one of the most popular Italian inventions in the Disney comic universe.
Atomo was "created" by Doctor Einmug by greatly enlarging an atom. This is described in the story Mickey Mouse in the Delta Dimension. He actually has a twin brother, Atomo Bloop-Bloop, but he has a very different character. Near the end of the story, Pete reverses the enlargement, which is one of the few scenes in a Disney comic that comes close to character death. From then on, Atomo Bleep-Bleep is the only enlarged atom around. He becomes Mickey's sidekick in a series of Scarpa stories such as The Sacred Spring of Seasons Past, Mickey Mouse and the Chirikawa Necklace, Mickey Mouse and the Bleep-Bleep 15 and The Emperor of Calisota. Apart from the last one, all of these have been released in the US. At the beginning of The Fabulous City of Shan-Grilla, Atomo gets called back to the Delta Dimension.
Scarpa later revived Atomo in a pair of stories where he collaborates with Ellsworth, something that is later taken up again by Luca Boschi and Alessandro Perina. In the 1980s, Atomo had another revival in four stories, e.g. pitting him against The Phantom Blot. The two stories by Alessandro Bencivenni (drawn by Massimo De Vita and Sergio Asteriti) are also notable for featuring Goofy alongside Atomo.
Atomo is also one of the few Italian characters that made it to an Egmont production, namely the story by Byron Erickson and Ferioli called A Mickey Mystery.
The most recent revival of the character was done by Casty, who had proclaimed Atomo his favourite character and teased fans with his talks of a trilogy of stories. Of those three planned big adventures, two have been released so far, plus two shorter gag stories. Topolino e gli Ombronauti abounds with quotes from Scarpa's cycle - especially The Delta Dimension and The Chirikawa Necklace - while Topolino e l'impero sottozero revives Nataniele Ragnatele from Sacred Spring. Both stories have been received with a lot of praise: At the time of writing (January 2021), L'impero sottozero is the second-highest rated Mickey Mouse story of all times on INDUCKS - behind The Chirikawa Necklace.
In some ways, Atomo fulfils a similar role as Eega Beeva - his meson breath, which can change the consistency and substance of pretty much everything, is a similar omnipotent 'weapon' as Eega's endless supply of items. Atomo is also of similar stature and, due to not being a normal being, noticeably naive.
