Some years ago, in Tokyolk, he was an intern for the evil Dr. Akita. Gyro helped Akita build a robot, called 2BO. Gyro programmed 2B0 to think of himself as a definitely real boy, however Akita reprogrammed 2B0 to be a weapon behind Gyro's back.

Akita let 2BO destroy Tokyolk. Gyro stopped working for Akita, and later got a job with McDuck Enterprises.
Working for McDuck[]
Ten years later, while regarded as the best scientist in Duckburg, Gyro was never able to shake the reputation that all his inventions turn evil, embittering Gyro. McDuck Enterprises' board of directors disliked Gyro and tried to fire him every chance they got, but Scrooge always had faith in him. At some point, Gyro acquired an intern of his own, Fenton Crackshell-Cabrera. Gyro tended to treat Fenton more than a little dismissively. In 2017, as a last-ditch attempt to invent something that didn't turn evil, Gyro came up with the idea for the Gizmosuit, which was completed by 2018. Against Gyro's own wishes, Fenton took the armour to use to save Gyro, Scrooge, Dewey, and Mark Beaks from the haywire B.U.D.D.Y., and later took to regularly using the suit as part of his secret identity, Gizmoduck. When Huey met a glitchy 2B0, now called B.O.Y.D. and brought him to the lab for repairs, Gyro forced himself to confront his past and returned to Tokyolk with Fenton, Huey, and B.O.Y.D. There they encountered and fought Akita and Gyro learned the truth about why 2B0 turned evil. Gyro fixed B.O.Y.D. by telling him, once again, that he was a definitely real boy. Realising how much he wished someone had given him a chance when he was an intern, Gyro hired Fenton full-time and declared him Doctor Crackshell-Cabrera.
