Brutopia

Brutopia is a fictional nation which, according to Don Rosa, occupies the eastern third of Russia (Siberia), like Calisota is the northern third of California. There is a Brutopian consulate in Duckburg.

Brutopia first appeared in 1957 in the story "A Cold Bargain" and is a caricature of the former U.S.S.R. and the Brutopian in the Barks classic "A Cold Bargain" is a caricature of Nikita Khrushchev. According to this Brutopia is ruled by a very hostile government. It seems that their goal is world power. Its agents seems to use whatever methods necessary to gain world power, including stealing others technology.

Once when Don Rosa was asked about the location of Brutopia, he said: "Barks made it quite obvious that he was implying that Brutopia was the equivalent of Russia or the USSR. I don't say it's exactly Russia, otherwise I would not call it Brutopia, I'd call it Russia. I place it as occupying the eastern third of Russia (Siberia), as I place Calisota as the northern third of California." Nothing much is known about the history of Brutopia. All we can say for certain is that the country is ruled by a very hostile and aggressive government. In two stories by Barks there are presented two different Brutopian flags. This may indicate that Brutopia was hit by a revolution or more likely a coup d'etat sometime between 1957 and 1965, perhaps a link to Leonid Brezhnev's take over in the U.S.S.R. in 1964? A funny detail in Don Rosa's Attaaaaaack! story from 2000, is that the Brutopian spy rented a luxury hotel room at the local Ritz's top floor. Traditionally, that's what the Soviets used to do during the cold war. Don Rosa also shows a Brutopian Sputnik falling down from the sky, in The Curse of Nostrildamus story from 1989. When asked if he has ever thought about sending the Ducks on an expedition to Brutopia Don Rosa says: "...that would be a tricky subject, with politics and insulting references to nations where Egmont now publishes Disney comics. But I might try it someday."
