According to one of the stories of the Haunted Mansion's history told by the Ghost Host over the years, one of the Mansion's two architects, Mr Coats, murdered the other (Mr Davis) by trapping him inside an inescapable coffin using his “Coats Automatic Hydraulic Coffinizer” (Parent Pending), which, after Coats activated it by pulling a wall sconce, entrapped Davis into the box where he stood. This was the origin of the Coffin Occupant.
