Darkwing Duck was an animated series that began in 1991, centering on the adventures of the superhero Darkwing Duck. The series is considered a spinoff of DuckTales, as it featured the characters of Launchpad McQuack and Gizmoduck from that series.
However, during development, it was not considered by its creators to be set in the same world as the earlier series, instead taking place in “alternate Duckiverse” — a notion later recanted, with a wealth of crossovers solidifying that the Launchpads and Gizmoducks of the two series are one and the same.
The series originally existed primarily as a cartoon series (with three distinct seasons), with licensed tie-in comics (beginning with Brawl in the Family) being released by the Disney Comics outfit as a secondary medium. Boom! Studios eventually relaunched the series as a comic line in full, with art by James Silvani, continuing the storyline after the end of the TV series and making its own crucial additions to St. Canard lore.
Synopsis[]
Egotistical superhero Darkwing Duck defends the city of St. Canard from various villains, while also juggling the responsibilities of being a single parent to his adopted daughter Gosalyn. He is aided in these endeavors by his sidekick Launchpad McQuack, and often collaborates with the benevolent secret organization known as S.H.U.S.H. against the likes of such villains as the Fearsome Five and F.O.W.L.

Behind the scenes[]
The Darkwing Duck series was launched in September of 1991 with the feature-length pilot Darkly Dawns The Duck. Notably, in its earlier stages, it would have spun off more directly from the DuckTales episode Double-O-Duck (from which it borrows F.O.W.L.), with the main character being himself called Double-O-Duck, and being more of a superspy than a superhero. However, the Ian Fleming estate objected to use of the “Double-O” designation in the title of a widely-marketed series not related to James Bond, leading to a retool where the main character was made more akin to a parody of “the Shadow”, Zorro or Batman.
