The Diamond-Nosed Rocket was constructed and paid for by the Maharajah of Eyesore. It cost “his weight in diamonds”, being meant to allow the Rajah to take part in the Great Space Race and get its owner to the Golden Moon first, allowing him to claim it for himself. When it blasted off, it was believed to be the fastest vehicle ever built on Earth, though the Beagle Boys' secret, illegally-constructed Beagle Rocket proved faster — and also capable of ramming and damaging the Maharajah's rocket, putting him out of the race.
