General Esteban is or was a male dognose.

Instrumental in the separation of Colombia and Panama, General Esteban became a member of the Panamanian army, supervising the construction of the Panama Canal in 1909 with a group of soldiers he made his "Praetorian Guard". A thoroughly dishonest man, Esteban wished to seize power in Panama and become a ruthless dictator, using the money from the Panama Canal (renamed Esteban Canal) to back his rule. Looking for any excuse to oust the Americans from the digging site, he spied on Theodore Roosevelt and Scrooge McDuck, and ended up discovering the Stone Jaguar with them. Before he could steal the gold for himself, the power-hungry villain was, however, knocked out by Chief Parita and sent back to Colombia to be imprisoned.

Behind the scenesEdit

Esteban is the main antagonist of the 2001 story The Sharpie of the Culebra Cut.

Though his name and appearance draw from the historical General Esteban Huertas, Don Rosa only did so because he could find no suitable historical Panamanian "villain", and he named his character 'General Esteban' rather than Huertas to distinguish the two, given that Huertas, far from a power-hungry would-be-dictator, is considered a national hero in real-life Panama.
