Gurgi was a humanoid furry creature of unknown species.
A diminutive, furry badger-like creature of unknown kind and origin, Gurgi lived in the Forbidden Forest of Prydain during the Dark Ages. Clever and witty, but also fearful and even cowardly on occasions, Gurgi loved eating apples most of all. When Taran got lost in the Forest looking for Hen Wen, he met Gurgi, who quickly became his friend.
Taran was initially reluctant to let the strange little man follow him around, especially considering his cowardice, but came to greatly respect Gurgi after he sacrificed his life for the greater good by jumping into the Black Cauldron. In exchange for giving the Black Cauldron to them, Taran and his friends then asked the Witches of Morva to bring Gurgi back to life, which they reluctantly did. Now loyal to a fault, Gurgi stayed Taran's friend ever after and accompanied him on his adventures, although he still goofed occasionally.
Behind the scenes
Taran first appeared in 1985 in The Black Cauldron. He is based on the character of the same name in Lloyd Alexander's Chronicles of Prydain, who was largely similar but man-sized rather than gnome-like in stature, enabling him to ride horses and fight with a sword when the situation called for it.
