Howard the Duck is a male anthropomorphic duck.
Description[]
The cynical, jeering Howard the Duck is a rival actor to Donald Duck; Donald views him as a knock-off of his own brand while Howard believes he is the future and Donald's screen persona is outdated. However, the two are not incapable of being friends (notably bonding over their shared disdain for Super Duck). Howard had two major theatrical roles, one the 1986 flop Howard the Duck, the other the more popular 2014 film Guardians of the Galaxy.
Behind the scenes[]
This version of the character of Howard the Duck first appeared in 2014 in the one-page comic Howard the Duck and Donald Duck.
The character originates in the Marvel multiverse, where he originally belongs to “Duckworld”, a dimension or planet entirely inhabited by anthropomorphic ducks. Although this is clearly incompatible with the Disney Comics Universe, the design compatibility between Howard and Donald has led to the occasional winking attempt by Marvel to posit that a version of the Duckburg may exist in Howard's world. However, all of this is irrelevant to the 2014 crossover, which instead takes the view that Howard exists on Donald's Earth as an actor whose life bears no direct resemblance to the comics character.
Though his design was later altered at Disney's demand, and the 2014 comic uses this revised design, the original Howard was designed as even more of a take-off on Donald Duck. Indeed, in a fairly unprecedented move, Disney themselves supplied Marvel Comics (whom they had yet to buy) with a revised model sheet for Howard.
