Dating back to 1986, Howard the Duck was one of the two major theatrical roles undertaken by Howard the Duck, Donald Duck's acting rival. Though deriding the film when trying to argue that his work was superior, Donald admitted in 2014 to actually finding the film to be a bit of a guilty pleasure for him. Indeed, Donald owns a VHS copy of the film.

A VHS copy of this film is seen in the 2014 comic story Howard the Duck and Donald Duck. The implication, of course, is that it is the Prime Universe equivalent of the widely-panned real-life 1986 Howard the Duck live-action film, although, of course, the real film used puppetry and a voice actor to bring Howard to life, rather than being a purely-live-action star vehicle for an actual Howard.
