Mickey's Magical World is an animated special hosting packaging several preexisting shorts. The original segments (if they can be called that, as they consist of redubbed, reedited versions of preexisting footage) feature Jiminy Cricket, Mickey Mouse, Huey, Dewey and Louie Duck, and, in cameo appearances, Goofy, Minnie Mouse, Clarabelle Cow, Clara Cluck, J. Audubon Woodlore, Humphrey the Bear, the Three Little Pigs (Fifer, Fiddler and Practical), Zeke Wolf, Ichabod Crane, Pluto, Captain Hook, Johnny Appleseed, Lady, Tramp, Scamp, Annette, Colette and Danielle, Cinderella, Bongo, Dumbo, the Mad Hatter and March Hare, Cyril Proudbottom, Pecos Bill, Peter, Ivan, the Wolf, Misha, Yasha and Vladimir, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (Happy, Sneezy, Bashful, Dopey, Grumpy, Doc and Sleepy).

Description[]

Jiminy Cricket gives a speech about the magic in the world, of which Mickey Mouse's life is a prime example. But as Jiminy recounts various events in the Mouse's life, Mickey, who intends to perform a magic show himself, keeps trying to come on-stage…

Continuity[]

  • Not content to simply reframe them, Jiminy Cricket's speeches about the broadcast cartoons provide several new narrative links between these preexisting stories: it is following his magical dream in Thru the Mirror (1936) that Mickey gets the idea to try to work some alchemical magic himself, leading into the events of The Worm Turns (1937). The inspiring sight of a fly beating up a spider in that cartoon then gives Mickey the idea to form a "ghostbusters shop" alongside Donald and Goofy, hence Lonesome Ghosts (1937).
  • The footage dubbed over that create the linking segments is borrowed, among others, from Pinocchio (1940), This Is Your Life, Donald Duck (1960) and From All Of Us To All Of You (1958).

Behind the scenes[]

This special was released in 1988 on VHS, being part of the celebrations of the 60th anniversary of Mickey Mouse's debut.
