Behind the scenes

Pete first appeared in 1925 in Alice Solves the Puzzle, where he was depicted as a peg-legged, eye-patched anthropomorphic bear. He remained a recurring character of the Alice Comedies cartoon series throughout its run and was carried over into the Oswald the Lucky Rabbit cartoon series, gracing both as an anthropomorphic bear.

His origins as an anthropomorphic cat may be traced to Alice the Whaler, where a feline cook appears on a ship along with an anthropomorphic mouse, clearly foreshadowing the events of Steamboat Willie, the first widely distributed instalment of the Mickey Mouse cartoon series. Pete appeared, in cat form, appeared in Steamboat Willie and many later episodes of the Mickey Mouse cartoon series, taking on a role as a recurring antagonist. His role in this series would lead to him being introduced into and appearing in many comics and appearing in spin-off series such as Donald Duck and Goofy.

Despite his role as a recurring antagonist for Mickey and his friends, he would also, in his bear form, maintain a role as a recurring antagonist in Oswald shorts produced by Charles Mintz and Walter Lantz, maintaining a recurring role there until the 1940's, after which he became an exclusive antagonist of Disney-owned characters in all form of media.
