Philippe Bunau-Varilla is or was a man of unknown species.

A French diplomat, Bunau-Varilla was the agent of France's treaty with Panama for the right to dig a canal linking the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Before the French sold their end of the treaty to the United States of America (who would complete the canal as the now-famous Panama Canal), Bunau-Varilla personally sold the rights to a small mountain (Gold Hill) to American tycoon Scrooge McDuck, who wished to dig for gold there.

Behind the scenesEdit

The historical Philippe Bunau-Varilla.

Bunau-Varilla is mentioned in the 2001 The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck bonus chapter The Sharpie of the Culebra Cut. He is based on the historical character of the same name, who, more than a diplomat, was also an engineer.
