Phineas is the ghost of a male human.

Description[]

Phineas, a pudgy, hunched man in a top hat and long coat, is one of the Haunted Mansion's happy haunts — specifically, one of the three Hitchhiking Ghosts. As with many of the Mansion's inhabitants, Phineas's biography and circumstances of death are the subject of a thousand contradictory rumors, though it is popularly held that he was some sort of conman. There is a tombstone for a Phineas Pock close to Ezra and Gus's graves, in the Mansion's family plot, but it is entirely possible that it doesn't even refer to him, but rather to Lord Phineas J. Pock or Phineas P. Pock, two other spooks from the Mansion.

Much like his fellows Ezra and Gus, Phineas awaits at the Mansion's exit, promising to follow mortal guests home and pester and prank them until they return to the Mansion (which they have done on several occasions). Though he is more genial and approachable than Ezra and Gus, and occasionally plays the straight man to their antics, Phineas shares their impish sense of humor and can be quite the bully when dealing with mortals.

At some point prior to 2002, all three Hitchhiking Ghosts somehow got trapped in a crate which found its way to the House of Mouse's overcrowded storage room, from which guests of the house would occasionally release them, only for them to be stuffed back in there after a few hours. However, it seems that the Hitchhikers eventually returned to their normal Mansion dwellings.

Behind the scenes[]

Phineas first appeared as a part of the Haunted Mansion attraction in Disneyland, which opened in 1969.

A persistent, but mistaken, theory holds that Phineas is the “Brother Dave” of one of the Mansion's tombstones, due to a piece of merchandise depicting him close to it.
