Shelley Marie is a human girl.
On one Halloween, when she was nine years old, eccentric little Shelley Marie hesitated on which Halloween costume to choose between a princess one and a villain one. Sensing her hesitation, a cohort of villains led by Grimhilde decided to give her a magical tour of the wonders of villainy to convince her to follow their dark path, and, after stepping into the Magic Mirror, Shelley Marie thus met, in quick succession, Grimhilde, Ursula, Maleficent and more. In the end, she returned home somewhat put-out by the dangers she had faced but more confident than ever in her love of a villain aesthetic. To her joyful surprise, her mother decided to go trick-or-treating with her and had herself dressed up as Maleficent. Oogie Boogie later told this story as a Halloween tale, although he had had no part in the original events.
Behind the scenes
Shelley Marie, who was designed by Eric Goldberg, was created to be the main protagonist of Villainous!. The appearance of Shelley Marie was said to be inspired by The Addams Family’s Wednesday Adams and Beetlejuice’s Lydia Deetz. Her name is, of course, a play on Frankenstein writer Mary Shelley.
