Sherlock Holmes was a human being. By certain accounts, he was fictional.
Description[]
Sherlock Holmes was a notorious British private detective. Working alongside Doctor Watson, Holmes was known for his genius intellect and his strict investigative methods based on logical deduction and the collection of clues. Holmes lived in a flat at 221B Baker Street, London, and was active in the 1890's.
According to some accounts, Sherlock Holmes genuinely existed, and was the inspiration (and unwitting neighbor) of the "Great Mouse Detective" Basil of Baker Street. In Indochina, he investigated a mystery involving trained cormorants, and a young Scrooge McDuck, recently returned from Australia, was instrumental in solving the mystery; however, unlike other of Holmes's cases, this adventure was not recounted in print and remained little-known, as the culprit (a "certain Oriental doctor") had managed to escape.
Other accounts, however, hold that Sherlock was a fictional character, the creation of Arthur Conan Doyle. Partially inspired by Daisy Holmes, a real-life sleuth whom Doyle knew in his childhood, the character went on to inspire many amateur detectives in the decades that followed.
