A Sultan is a form of monarch; the equivalent female title is Sultana.

Description[]

Sultan is a title used by the monarchs of many Middle-Eastern countries from ancient times to the present day, such as the ruler of the city-state of Agrabah. Sultans are of rank equivalent to a king, but do not fall into their usual trappings, usually preferring ornate turbans to heavy golden crowns. The daughter of a Sultan is still, however, commonly understood to be a Princess. Although one might expect the province of a Sultan to be a Sultanate, at least one known Sultan ruled a Caliphate.

Behind the scenes[]

In real life, the title of Sultan is not quite equivalent to that of "caliph", and it is distinguished from the more secular "king" by religious implications within the Muslim world which are implicitly absent from the Disney version, inasmuch as the events of Aladdin (featuring the Prime Universe's most recognizable Sultan character) are established by Hercules and the Arabian Nights to predate the historical foundation of Islam (in spite of the fact that the Sultan of Agrabah briefly swore by Allah in Aladdin).
