The Empire-Builder from Calisota, also printed as The Richest Duck in the World, is a comic story written and drawn by Don Rosa. It features Scrooge McDuck, Hortense McDuck, Matilda McDuck, Donald Duck and Della Duck, King El Dorado, Foola Zoola, Bombie the Zombie, John Jacob Astor Quackmore Duck, Emily Quackfaster, Katie Mallard, Copperhead McViper, King Fulla Colla and the Brown-Mustached Mayor. It is Chapter Eleven of The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck.
Plot[]
Scrooge McDuck travels around the world, strengthening his financial empire, seeking to become the richest duck in the world. However, he is also progressively losing his moral side, to the disapproval of his sisters Matilda and Hortense. This culminates when Scrooge illegally burns down a village for profit in Africa. Karma then kicks in when nefarious sorcerer Foola Zoola decides to take revenge for the burnt village by summoning an undead servant carrying a terrible curse on Scrooge McDuck.
Continuity[]
- The Richest Duck in the World (2019), an episode of DuckTales 2017, was partially inspired by this story, especially in its treatment of the character of Bombie.
- The opening flashback sequence of Under Siege! (2017) takes place shortly after the last page of this story; it sees Scrooge loading the first of his money into the newly-built Money Bin.
Behind the scenes[]
This story was first printed in April of 1994 in the Islandish Andrés Önd #1994-15. It was first printed in English in Uncle Scrooge #295 and was then reprinted in Uncle Scrooge Adventures by Don Rosa #4, the Don Rosa Library and in the various printing of The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck.
Unfortunately, in February 2023, Disney announced that they were removing this story (along with Rosa's later "The Dream of a Lifetime") from circulation, despite it being the penultimate chapter in a 12-part story.
