The Last of the Clan McDuck is a comic story written and drawn by Don Rosa, with some creative input from Byron Erickson. It features Scrooge McDuck, Fergus McDuck, Matilda McDuck, Hortense McDuck, Downy O'Drake, Jake McDuck, Burt the Ditchdigger, Sir Quackly McDuck and, in flashbacks, Seafoam McDuck, Swindle McSue, Sir Eider McDuck and Macbeth.
The story starts in Glasgow, Scotland. Scrooge McDuck has just turned 10 and is deemed able to work by his kind but very poor father Fergus McDuck; he subsequently wins his first coin ever as a shoeshiner. However, the coin in question is an American dime he can't possibly hope to spend in Scotland; as he has technically been swindled, it teaches him to be cautious when it comes to business. He later visits the abandoned castle that once housed the Clan McDuck during its hours of glory, and meets a peculiar keeper (actually Sir Quackly McDuck's ghost) who helps him fight off the Whiskervilles while also inspiring him to go to America to get rich again like his ancestors.
- The History of the Clan McDuck (1992) was originally created as a prologue to this story.
- A younger Scrooge is seen collecting firewood and peat to sell them to the rich at "monstrous" prices, as he had mentioned he used to do in Uncle Scrooge and the Golden River (1958).
Behind the scenesEdit
The Last of Clan McDuck is the first chapter of The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck. It was based on an earlier project of Rosa's, Of Ducks, Dimes and Destinies, which was postponed by Byron Erickson's ordering of Life and Times and was eventually completed in 1994 as an additional chapter to the series. The Last of the Clan McDuck initially had a prologue, which was cut on Erickson's demand and has now been published in sketch form as The History of the Clan McDuck.
This story was first published in 1992 in the Norwegian stand-alone book Her it dit liv, Joakim. It was first printed in English in 1993 in Uncle Scrooge #285. It was later reprinted in Uncle Scrooge Adventures in Color #1, various hardcover editions of The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck, and in The Don Rosa Library #4.
