Voltaire the Vulture is or was a male Toon resembling a non-anthropomorphic vulture.

Description

Voltaire the Vulture was a malevolent Toon vulture and Baron Von Rotten's pet. He shared his name with the French philosopher and writer, which may have been just due to the obvious pun but may also indicate Voltaire the Vulture was (like the historical Voltaire) famous for his sharp and biting wit.[1]

Voltaire was no longer by his master's side in 1947 when Von Rotten enacted his plan to destroy Toontown, although he had apparently lived long enough to see the beginnings of Von Rotten's Judge Doom disguise.[2] Knowing the man's unstable nature, it is chillingly possible that Von Rotten had tested his terrifying invention, the Dip, on his "beloved pet", though it is but a theory.

Behind the scenes

Voltaire the Vulture was planned to appear in the 1988 film Who Framed Roger Rabbit, but was cut due to time and budget constraints.

As far as can be parsed from his appearance as an action figure (the only medium through which he was released to the public), his design was closely based on the Vultures who appear in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. As Toon versions of Grimhilde and Snow White can both be seen in Who Framed Roger Rabbit, it is possible Voltaire was actually one of the two Toons created to portray those very Vultures in the animated biopic of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' lives.

Notes and References

  1. This is, of course, presuming that Voltaire was a fully sapient individual; it is possible he may have been closer to a real vulture in intelligence than this theory would indicate.
  2. His only remaining true appearance is an action figure where he stands on the shoulder of Baron Von Rotten in his Judge Doom costume.
